The bright sunlight we're exposed to every day has both benefits and drawbacks. If we don't know how to protect ourselves, the ultraviolet (UV) rays that come with the sun are a major factor that can shockingly accelerate the premature aging process of both our facial skin and hair. Let's take a look at how UV rays can harm us.

UV rays and premature facial aging: wrinkles, dark spots, and sagging

  • Our facial skin is the area most directly exposed to the sun, and UV rays are the biggest enemy that can significantly age our skin:
  • Destroys collagen and elastin: UVA rays can penetrate deep into the skin and damage collagen and elastin, the important proteins that keep skin elastic and firm. When collagen and elastin are destroyed, the skin begins to develop wrinkles, deep lines, and sagging.
  • Stimulates the production of abnormal pigments: UVB rays are the main culprit in stimulating melanocytes to produce more melanin to protect the skin. However, at the same time, they also cause problems of darkening of the skin, dark spots, freckles, melasma, and uneven skin tone.
  • Makes skin dry and dehydrated: UV rays can damage the skin's moisture barrier, causing it to lose water, become dry, rough, and lose its elasticity.
  • Increases the risk of skin cancer: In addition to aesthetic concerns, prolonged exposure to UV rays without protection also increases the risk of skin cancer.

Research confirms: UV rays do indeed accelerate premature hair aging.

While many people are familiar with the effects of UV rays on the face, the truth is that UV also has a profound effect on the hair and scalp, damaging the structure, proteins, pigments and the hair growth cycle. Research from many institutions around the world continuously supports this fact, and here is the most definitive evidence yet.

1. UVA/UVB causes hair to whiten quickly and hair to become thinner.

Zhai X. et al. (2021), PMCID: PMC8177228

This study is considered one of the most definitive evidence yet. Researchers found that when hair and follicles are continuously exposed to UVA and UVB:

  • The number of melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) is reduced.

  • Significantly increased gray hair

  • Hair is smaller and the roots are shallower.

The result is hair that turns gray faster than your actual age and hair that appears noticeably thinner.
This is the mechanism that answers the question of why people who are exposed to the sun regularly are more prone to gray hair and thinning hair.

2. UV is a major accelerator of hair weathering.

Cedirian S. et al. (2025), ScienceDirect

This Exposome research explains that UV is one of the factors that cause “cumulative damage” to hair, including:

  • Protein breakdown in hair

  • loss of pigment

  • Cuticle degeneration

  • Dryness and fragility

All of this combined is what's called hair weathering , or the deterioration of hair due to environmental factors, with UV being the most significant variable.

3. UV stimulates oxidative stress that accelerates premature graying of hair.

Kumar AB et al. (2018), PMCID: PMC6290285

An in-depth review from the International Journal of Trichology states:

  • Premature graying of hair is partly caused by oxidative stress.

  • UV is one of the main triggers of this condition.

  • Oxidative stress destroys melanocytes and reduces pigment production.

In short, UV rays don't just fade hair color, they also "speed up the hair's color-producing system", thus accelerating the graying process.

4. Scalp with high oxidative stress = hair grows slowly and falls out more easily.

Salzer et al. (2019), PMC

This study investigated the relationship between scalp health and hair growth and found that:

  • Scalp with high oxidative stress is prone to

    • My hair grows slower.

    • Hair falls out more easily

    • Hair cycle is disrupted

UV is one of the direct triggers of oxidative stress on the scalp.
This means that the sun doesn't just damage the hair, it also disturbs the hair's origin area.

5. UVB destroys hair proteins 2–5 times more than UVA.

Rele & Mohile (2005), Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B

One of the classic works in photobiology found that:

  • UVB has a higher power to destroy keratin proteins than UVA.

  • Damage is 2–5 times greater

  • It shows the role of UVB in making hair dry, brittle and prone to breakage.

This figure is the clearest quantitative evidence yet as to why sun-exposed hair deteriorates faster than protected hair.

Holistic Beauty: Good health goes hand in hand with both your scalp and face.

Scalp health is crucial to hair health. Damaged scalp skin from UV rays can weaken hair follicles and weaken new hair growth. Taking care of both your face and scalp from sun damage is therefore essential.

Protect your face and hair from the harmful effects of UV rays:

Prevention is the most important thing to slow down the premature aging process caused by UV rays on both your face and hair:

  • Apply sunscreen daily: Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and Broad-Spectrum Protection that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply it all over your face and neck at least 15-20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses: Wearing a wide-brimmed hat will protect both your face and hair from direct sunlight, while sunglasses will protect the skin around your eyes.
  • Use hair care products that contain sunscreen (UV Filters): Many hair care products today contain sunscreen, which will help protect your hair from UV rays.
  • Use Conditioner or Hair Oil: These products can help coat and protect your hair from dryness and damage caused by the sun.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to strong sunlight: especially during the sun's strongest hours of the day (around 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.).
  • Eat foods high in antioxidants: Antioxidants help protect skin and hair cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Use scalp and skin care products that contain antioxidants: such as vitamin C, vitamin E, or other natural extracts.
